CO2 vs. Sciton Erbium Laser Resurfacing

What to Expect for Results, Recovery, and Risks

“Laser treatment” might sound like a single procedure, but it actually covers a variety of options. Some are lighter and refresh the skin’s surface, while others go deeper to address wrinkles and scars. This is why your experience may differ from someone else’s, depending on what your provider recommends.

Before picking a laser treatment, think about what you want to improve and how much downtime you’re okay with. CO2 and Sciton erbium resurfacing each offer different ways to reach your goals. Here’s how those differences might affect your skin.

CO2 vs Erbium Laser Resurfacing: What's the Difference?

Consider what brought you here. If you have rough skin texture, that’s a surface issue. Deeper wrinkles and pitted acne scars go below the surface. The treatment needs to reach the right depth to make a real difference.

CO2 laser resurfacing and erbium:YAG resurfacing both use ablative lasers. “Ablative” means they remove skin in a controlled way. As your skin heals, new skin forms, and collagen production can slowly improve texture and firmness.

The main difference is how each laser’s energy interacts with water in your skin. Erbium energy is absorbed efficiently, so it removes tissue with less heat spreading to nearby areas. CO2 creates more leftover heat, which helps tighten collagen but can also cause more swelling, redness, and changes in skin color.

You don’t need to know the technical details to make a good choice. What matters is how much treatment your skin concern needs and what that means for your recovery.

Why Sciton Erbium Offers So Much Flexibility

“Erbium resurfacing” can mean anything from a light peel to a much deeper treatment. So if someone says they returned to their routine in a few days, it’s important to ask what kind of treatment they actually received.

Sciton’s technology lets your provider adjust how deep the laser goes and how much heat is used, separately. This means they can customize your treatment without always adding more heat for deeper resurfacing.

At Aespala, a MicroLaser Peel removes a thin layer from the surface and can help with dullness, mild lines, and uneven texture. Contour TRL is used for deeper, full-area resurfacing to treat more noticeable wrinkles, roughness, and some scars. Full-field means the whole skin surface in the chosen area is treated.

There’s also ProFractional laser treatment, which makes tiny channels in the skin while leaving the areas in between untouched to help healing. Both CO2 and erbium lasers can use this fractional approach, so “fractional” refers to the treatment style, not the type of laser.

This difference explains why recovery can vary so much from person to person. A deep, full-area erbium treatment may take longer to heal than a light, fractional CO2 session.

How Much Difference Will You See?

A good treatment plan matches your goals with the amount of resurfacing needed. Fixing surface roughness or fine lines is different from treating deep wrinkles around the mouth.

CO2 is often very effective for deeper wrinkles and scars. Some studies show more improvement in deep wrinkles with CO2, though results can vary. If you’re okay with a longer recovery, this level of correction might be worth it.

Sciton erbium can also be used for deep resurfacing. Its main benefit is letting your provider choose the right depth and heat for your needs. A lighter peel can help with uneven texture, while deeper lines or acne scars may need a stronger treatment. For pitted acne scars, the shape and depth of each scar matter, and resurfacing might be just one part of your treatment plan.

Being specific during your consultation helps us help you. Let us know if you want to soften crow’s feet, fade dark spots, or smooth uneven texture. Ask to see examples of similar cases and find out what treatments those patients had.

You’ll see some improvement as your skin heals, and collagen keeps building over the next few months. Deeper treatments can bring big changes in one session, while lighter or fractional treatments might be done as a series. If you have a lot of loose skin, a different approach may be better.

How Much Recovery Time Should You Plan For?

Erbium resurfacing usually means less downtime than CO2, especially when less heat is used. But it’s important to know what “less downtime” really means before you make plans.

After a light treatment, you might have a few days of peeling and redness. Deeper resurfacing takes more commitment. Your skin can feel tender and sunburned, and you may have swelling, oozing, or crusting before it heals. Numbing or other comfort steps depend on how intense the procedure is.

Recovery is about a week for erbium and up to two weeks for CO2. At Aespala, deeper Contour TRL treatments usually heal in 7–10 days. These are just starting points, deeper treatments or personal healing differences can make recovery longer.

A Simple Recovery Timeline

Stage What you may notice What to plan for
First few days Warmth, redness, tenderness, and swelling; deeper treatment may ooze or crust Follow the cleansing and protective ointment instructions for your treatment
Around the first 1–2 weeks Peeling and surface healing; lighter treatments may settle sooner Resume makeup and active skincare only when your provider clears you
Following weeks Pinkness may remain after the skin surface has healed Keep protecting your skin; leave extra time before an important event
Next several months Texture and firmness may continue improving as collagen remodels Maintain sun protection and discuss whether further treatment is appropriate

You might feel ready to work from home before you feel ready for a big event. Pinkness can last for weeks after a deep erbium treatment, and redness from an intensive CO2 session can last for months. If you have a wedding, trip, or special date coming up, mention it before picking your treatment.

Aftercare is key to getting the results you want. Keep the treated area clean and protected, don’t pick or scrub, and wait for your provider’s okay before using retinoids, exfoliating acids, or makeup. Avoid the sun while healing, and use daily broad-spectrum sunscreen once your skin is ready.

Is Sciton Erbium the Safer Choice?

Because erbium can remove tissue precisely with less leftover heat, it may be safer, especially if you want to avoid extra thermal injury. Erbium often causes less swelling and redness than CO2 and has a lower risk of some pigmentation changes. Erbium is less likely to cause hypopigmentation, or skin lightening, but it’s still possible.

If safety and recovery are important to you, erbium is worth considering. It’s also important to look at the treatment settings and your skin type. Deep erbium resurfacing still requires careful healing, and both lasers can cause infection, cold sore flare-ups, scarring, lasting redness, or changes in skin color.

Darker skin tones need extra care because inflammation can cause pigmentation changes. Erbium might work for some, but your provider should consider how your skin reacts to irritation, any history of melasma or dark spots, recent tanning, and past treatments.

Let your provider know about any medications, cold sores, unusual scarring, or problems with healing. These details help decide how to prepare and if resurfacing is right for you now. Sometimes a gentler or different treatment is a better fit.

Let's Talk About Your Skin

You might be okay with taking a week or more to heal if it means treating lines that have bothered you for years. Or you might prefer smaller changes from a series of lighter treatments. Either way, sharing your preference helps us plan your care.

Aespala’s Sciton options give us many ways to help. We’ll talk about your concerns, explain the differences between treatments, and help you understand what healing will be like. You’ll also get to discuss how many sessions you might need and the cost, which depend on the area, depth, comfort steps, and follow-up care.

Results from deeper resurfacing can last for years, though aging and sun exposure still happen. Keeping up with your skincare and sun protection helps you maintain those results. We can talk about maintenance treatments as your skin changes.

If you want help sorting through your options, schedule a consultation with our team at Aespala’s Oak Brook office. Bring your questions and any important dates you’re planning around. We’ll help you find what works best for your skin and your lifestyle.
